Let Claude take the wheel

Smarter, faster and can now use your computer!

Hi!

Back in September OpenAI released OpenAI o1-preview, which showed big steps forward in reasoning capabilities and aptitude for complex work.

This week Anthropic announced their own major updates to their Claude AI assistant, pushing those boundaries even further with improved performance and groundbreaking new features.

Meet the new and updated Claude 3.5 models

Claude 3.5 Sonnet just got a serious upgrade! Tests show improved reasoning, knowledge, problem-solving and math skills compared with its predecessor and competitors but the new version is especially crushing it at coding tasks. It outperforms other top AI models including OpenAI’s o1-preview in coding tests.

The best part? No extra cost or slowdown.

Claude 3.5 Haiku is joining the family as the speed demon of the bunch and without a hefty price tag. It's just as fast and affordable as the previous Haiku, but now matches the smarts of much larger models. Perfect for coding tasks and able to handle huge volumes of data.

Work hands-free. Claude controls your computer for you

In what might be the coolest update, Claude can now actually use computers like a human would - clicking, typing, and navigating around.

It’s a bit like handing over your keyboard and mouse to Claude - it can now help with tasks like:

  • Filling out forms or creating spreadsheets using data from different sources

  • Testing software

  • Conducting research across multiple platforms

  • Automating repetitive computer tasks

The computer use feature is still in early beta and Anthropic have been careful to point out that it can be prone to errors - for example, Claude sometimes struggles with basics like scrolling.

Despite the learning curve as Claude figures out how to be a better digital co-pilot, this opens up huge possibilities for automation and assistance.

This is groundbreaking stuff - while competitors like Microsoft Copilot and OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop app can look at your screen and make suggestions, Claude is the first to actually carry out the work for you.

What this means for you

Whether you're a developer, business user, or just curious about AI, these updates make Claude more capable and practical for everyday use. The computer control feature is especially interesting - imagine having an AI assistant that not only helps you navigate through complex workflows but carries out a chunk of the work for you!

For anyone concerned about the risks of AI ‘taking over’, it's worth noting that Anthropic is working closely with US and UK AI safety institutes (US AISI and UK AISI) to ensure responsible development.

They're viewing this early stage as an opportunity to learn and carefully navigate the implications of these new capabilities as they explore its potential.

Want to try it out? The upgraded Claude 3.5 Sonnet is available now, and Haiku will be rolling out later this month. The computer use feature is available in beta through Anthropic's API and major cloud platforms.
