ChatGPT levels up with memory

Streamline your interactions with AI that remembers

Hi!

In February of this year OpenAI announced that they were testing a new memory feature. This update gave ChatGPT the ability to remember things from past discussions to make future conversations easier and more relevant.

As of yesterday, this memory feature is now available to all users, both on free and paid plans. (If you haven’t already had the chance to use it, you should be given the option to enable memory on your next login.)

Without memory, ChatGPT doesn’t remember past chats or carry instructions or preferences from one chat to the next; every chat is a new interaction from scratch.

This was particularly annoying for anyone who had to keep feeding the same info or context each time or reference previous conversations manually.

So how might you use memory to make interactions with ChatGPT more useful?

Request specific formats for certain responses

If you like responses to be given in short bullet points for example, you may already be using Custom Instructions to document this preference.

Memory allows you to tailor this further as ChatGPT learns more about your needs with each chat and adds relevant information to your memories.

Tailor generated content to your liking

Ask ChatGPT to remember your preferred style and tone so you don’t have to include this in the prompt each time.

As you interact more, ChatGPT's memory will refine its understanding of your preferences, building on any information you've already set in Custom Instructions.

Log useful details about you or your family

If ChatGPT knows that you’re vegetarian or that your child doesn’t like mushrooms then it can tailor any meal ideas or recipes accordingly.

Book or movie recommendations can span multiple chats without you needing to remind ChatGPT of your preferences.

Ask ChatGPT to remember specifics about your business or work

Allowing ChatGPT to remember details about your work should mean you get more relevant, useful responses.

Using memory can help tailor content and strategies to your specific industry or target audience.

While the memory feature offers many benefits, it's understandable that people may have concerns about privacy and security when information is being logged. OpenAI has implemented several measures to address these concerns.

In theory, ChatGPT is not supposed to add anything overly personal or sensitive to its memory e.g. financial or health information. Beyond this, the flexibility and control OpenAI offers users should give some added peace of mind.

You will see each time memories have been updated. You can hover over the notification to see what’s been added or click through to manage memory information.

Don’t forget, you can:

  • Turn memory on/off completely via Settings

  • Update Data Controls to determine whether your content can be used to train the ChatGPT model

  • Delete specific memories if ChatGPT has noted information that you want it to forget

  • Opt for temporary chats if you want to discuss anything personal or include sensitive information (A temporary chat won’t be included in the memory, used to train the OpenAI model or included in the chat history)

Take some time to explore your account settings, understand what information is being stored, and use the privacy controls provided.

As with any technology, the key is to harness its benefits while being aware of any limitations or potential risks.

More personalized and context-aware AI tools make our interactions with AI more efficient and tailored to our individual needs. As AI continues to evolve, features like memory are just the beginning…
